How Much Does an ATV Weigh? Youth, Sport and Utility Weights by Model
By the Offroad Grip editors 7 min read Rev. Oct 13, 2026
Checklist
- Youth ATVs: about 220 to 290 lb. Sport ATVs: about 385 to 425 lb.
- Utility ATVs: about 580 to 950 lb, most between 600 and 750 lb.
- Side-by-sides weigh about 1,000 to 2,000 lb, two to three times a utility quad.
- Wet or curb weight includes a full fuel tank; dry weight does not.
- Polaris lists both: the Sportsman 600 is 703 lb dry and 743 lb curb.
- Add trailer, gear and fuel cans before comparing to a Jeep's tow rating.
Procedure
A full-size utility ATV weighs about 580 to 950 lb ready to ride, and most 450cc to 700cc models fall between 600 and 750 lb. Sport ATVs are much lighter at roughly 385 to 425 lb, youth ATVs weigh about 220 to 290 lb, and side-by-sides start around 1,000 lb and run to about 2,000 lb. Those ranges come from the 2026 and 2027 spec pages of Yamaha, Honda, Polaris and Can-Am.
Before comparing two numbers, check what each one includes. Yamaha and Honda publish a wet or curb weight with a full tank of fuel. Can-Am publishes an estimated dry weight, and Polaris lists dry weight for most models and both figures for some. The gap is usually 40 to 50 lb on a utility quad, which matters when you are near a trailer or truck limit.
ATV weight by class at a glance
| Class | Typical weight | Example models |
|---|---|---|
| Youth (50cc to 110cc) | About 220 to 290 lb | Yamaha YFZ50, Honda TRX90X, Polaris Outlaw 110 EFI, Yamaha Raptor 110 |
| Sport (250cc to 700cc) | About 385 to 425 lb | Honda TRX250X, Yamaha YFZ450R, Yamaha Raptor 700 |
| Mid-size utility (420cc to 450cc) | About 580 to 650 lb | Honda FourTrax Rancher, Yamaha Kodiak 450 EPS |
| Full-size utility (500cc to 700cc) | About 650 to 750 lb | Yamaha Kodiak 700, Yamaha Grizzly EPS, Honda Foreman Rubicon, Polaris Sportsman 600, Can-Am Outlander 500/700 |
| Big-bore utility (850cc to 1000cc) | About 900 to 950 lb | Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 |
| Side-by-side (for comparison) | About 1,000 to 2,000 lb | Honda Pioneer 520, Polaris RZR Trail S, Yamaha Viking, Yamaha Wolverine RMAX2 1000 |
Within a class, weight climbs with engine size, power steering, independent rear suspension, steel versus aluminum wheels, and factory winches. A Kodiak 700 with power steering weighs 27 lb more than the base model, according to the figures in our Yamaha Grizzly vs Kodiak 700 comparison.

Wet, curb and dry weight explained
The three terms mean different things, and makers do not all use the same one.
- Wet weight (Yamaha). Yamaha defines it as the vehicle with all standard equipment and all fluids, including oil, coolant and a full tank of fuel, without options or accessories.
- Curb weight (Honda, Polaris). Honda’s spec pages say curb weight includes all standard equipment, required fluids and a full tank of fuel. In practice it is the same idea as wet weight.
- Dry or estimated dry weight (Polaris, Can-Am). Leaves out fuel and usually some fluids. It is always the smaller number, so it flatters a machine in a comparison.
Polaris publishes both for some models, which shows the real gap. The 2027 Sportsman 600 is 703 lb dry and 743 lb curb, a 40 lb difference with a 4.5-gallon tank. The Sportsman XP 1000 Ultimate is 904 lb dry and 950 lb curb. When a spec sheet only lists dry weight, adding about 40 to 50 lb gives a fair estimate for a full-size utility quad.
Neither figure includes the rider, cargo on the racks, a winch you added, or mud. A utility quad caked after a wet trail ride can carry a surprising amount of extra weight in its wheel wells and skid plates.
Side-by-side weights for comparison
Buyers deciding between a quad and a side-by-side often underestimate how much heavier the side-by-side is. Current examples:
| Model (model year) | Published weight | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Polaris RZR 200 EFI, youth (2027) | 735 lb | Estimated dry |
| Honda Pioneer 520 (2027) | 1,067 lb | Curb |
| Polaris RZR Trail S Sport (2027) | 1,330 lb | Estimated dry |
| Yamaha Viking EPS (2026) | 1,475 lb | Wet |
| Honda Talon 1000R FOX Live Valve (2026) | 1,607 lb | Curb |
| Polaris Ranger XP 1000 Premium (2027) | 1,639 lb | Estimated dry |
| Honda Pioneer 1000 Deluxe (2026) | 1,781 lb | Curb |
| Yamaha Wolverine RMAX2 1000 (2026) | 1,993 lb | Wet |
Even the youth RZR 200 weighs about as much as a full-size utility quad. A full-size side-by-side is two to three times the weight of a 700cc ATV, which changes the trailer you need and usually rules out a pickup bed.
Towing an ATV with a Jeep or other vehicle
What the tow vehicle sees is the whole package: ATV wet weight, trailer, straps, fuel cans, coolers and gear on the trailer. Run the numbers for your setup:
- One utility ATV. About 700 lb plus a light single-axle trailer and gear. This sits comfortably under a Jeep Wrangler JL 2-door’s 2,000 lb rating.
- Two utility ATVs. About 1,400 to 1,500 lb before the trailer. Add a tandem trailer and gear and you can pass 2,000 lb, which is beyond a 2-door JL. A JL 4-door is rated 3,500 lb.
- A side-by-side. 1,000 to 2,000 lb on its own, plus a heavier trailer. Many setups go past 3,500 lb, which puts them outside most Wranglers. The exception is a 2024 or later 4-door Rubicon with the 2.0L or 3.6L, automatic and 4.10 axle, rated 5,000 lb.
Our Jeep Wrangler towing capacity chart lists every JK and JL rating by year, door count and axle ratio. Older JKs with a 3.21 axle are rated as low as 1,000 lb, which is tight even for one quad and a trailer.
The trailer’s empty weight is on its spec sheet or can be measured at a public truck scale. Jeep’s owner’s manuals also note that tongue weight counts against the vehicle’s load, along with passengers and cargo, so a Jeep loaded for a weekend has less margin than the tow rating alone suggests. Load the ATV so the trailer is slightly nose-heavy, never tail-heavy, and secure it so it cannot shift.
Hauling an ATV in a truck bed
A single utility or sport ATV fits in many full-size pickup beds with the tailgate down, but weight is only one of three checks.
- Payload. The tire and loading placard on the driver’s door pillar gives the maximum combined weight of occupants and cargo. The ATV’s wet weight, everyone in the cab and any gear all come out of that figure.
- Ramps. Loading ramps carry a weight rating. If you ride the ATV up, the rating has to cover the ATV and the rider together, and a 700 lb quad with a 200 lb rider needs ramps rated well above 900 lb as a pair. Arched ramps reduce the risk of the ATV high-centering at the tailgate.
- Tie-downs. Use four points, pulling down and slightly outward, and make sure the straps’ working load limit covers the ATV’s weight.
Loading is the riskiest part. A heavy utility quad that stalls or loses traction halfway up a steep ramp can roll back or tip. A winch, or loading from a dock or bank to lower the angle, reduces the risk.
Lifting and moving an ATV by hand
A youth ATV at 220 to 290 lb can be shifted by two adults, but a 600 to 950 lb utility quad cannot be lifted safely by people. If one rolls over on a trail, getting it upright is a job for two or three people working together, rocking it back onto its wheels rather than lifting it, with the engine off and fuel valve closed where fitted.
For storage and service, use a lift or jack rated for the ATV’s weight, not a car jack balanced under the frame. Many owners use a dedicated ATV lift for oil changes and tire work. Before buying a used sport model such as the Yamaha Raptor 350, take a helper; even the lighter quads are awkward to move around a seller’s yard with a flat tire or a dead battery.
The simplest rule for anything you tow, haul or lift: use the wet weight, add the rider and gear, and leave a margin rather than loading right up to the rated limit.
Troubleshooting
Owners also ask
Q1 How much does a 4-wheeler weigh in pounds?
A typical full-size 4x4 utility ATV weighs 600 to 750 lb with fuel. Current examples include the Honda FourTrax Rancher 4x4 at 615 lb, the Yamaha Kodiak 700 at 659 lb, the Yamaha Grizzly EPS at 701 lb and the Polaris Sportsman 600 at 743 lb curb. Big 1000cc models such as the Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 reach 950 lb.
Q2 What is the difference between dry weight and wet weight on an ATV?
Dry weight leaves out fuel and usually some fluids, so it is the lowest number a maker can publish. Wet weight, which Honda calls curb weight, includes all standard equipment, oil, coolant and a full tank of fuel. Polaris lists both for the 2027 Sportsman 600: 703 lb estimated dry and 743 lb curb. Use the wet figure for trailers and truck beds.
Q3 How much does a youth ATV weigh?
Current youth ATVs weigh roughly 220 to 290 lb. Yamaha lists its YFZ50 at 220 lb wet and the Raptor 110 at 287.5 lb wet, Honda lists the TRX90X at 262 lb curb, and Polaris lists the Outlaw 110 EFI at 278 lb estimated dry. That is still well over the weight of the child riding it, which is why age and size guidance on the warning labels matters.
Q4 Can a Jeep Wrangler tow an ATV?
Yes, in most cases. A JL 2-door is rated 2,000 lb and a 4-door 3,500 lb, so one utility ATV of about 700 lb on a light trailer is well within either. Two utility ATVs on a tandem trailer can approach or exceed the 2-door limit once trailer weight and gear are added. Weigh the loaded trailer if you are close.
Q5 Can I put an ATV in the bed of a pickup truck?
Many owners do, but check two numbers first. The payload on the truck's door-jamb placard has to cover the ATV's wet weight plus passengers and anything else in the truck. The loading ramps must be rated for the ATV's weight, and for the rider too if you ride it up. Strap it down at four points and keep the tailgate's own load limit in mind.
