How to Reset the Oil Life on a Jeep Wrangler (JK and JL)

To reset the oil life on a JK Jeep Wrangler (2007 to 2018), turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine, slowly press the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor three times within 10 seconds, then turn the ignition back to LOCK. That is the method in Jeep’s 2017 and 2010 JK owner’s manuals, and it is the only one they give.

On a JL Wrangler (2018 on), the primary method uses the instrument cluster: put the ignition in ON/RUN without pressing the brake pedal, open the Vehicle Info menu, scroll to Oil Life, and press and hold the OK button until the display resets to 100%. The same three-press pedal method is listed in the JL manual as a secondary option.

Which method for which Wrangler

Jeep’s JK manuals explain that the dealer resets the indicator after an oil change, and that if someone else does the service, you can reset it yourself with these steps. What matters for any later warranty claim is proof that the oil was changed on time, so save your receipts.

JK Wrangler (2007 to 2018): pedal method, step by step

1. Close the doors and sit in the driver’s seat. Make sure the engine is off.
2. Turn the key to ON. The dash lights come on. Do not start the engine.
3. Slowly press the accelerator all the way to the floor, then release it. Do this three times, finishing all three within 10 seconds. Slow and complete presses matter more than speed.
4. Turn the key to LOCK (off).
5. Start the engine to check. If the message returns, the reset did not take. Repeat the steps.

The 2010 JK manual describes the same procedure for the “CHAngE OIL” message that flashes in the odometer. JKs with the larger cluster display can show oil life as a percentage, and the 2017 manual says pushing and releasing the MENU button hides the message temporarily. That only dismisses the reminder; it does not reset it.

JL Wrangler (2018 on): cluster menu method

1. Keep your foot off the brake. On a push-button JL, pressing the brake while pushing START starts the engine.
2. Press the START/STOP button once or twice until the ignition is in ON/RUN with the engine off. On key-start JLs, turn the key to ON.
3. Use the steering wheel arrow buttons to find Vehicle Info in the cluster display.
4. Scroll to the Oil Life submenu.
5. Press and hold OK until the gauge resets to 100%.
6. Turn the ignition off, then start the engine to confirm the message is gone.

JL secondary method: the gas pedal

If the menu is not cooperating, or you are used to the older method, the JL manual lists a “secondary method” that mirrors the JK:

1. Without pressing the brake, put the ignition in ON/RUN. Do not start the engine.
2. Fully press the accelerator slowly three times within 10 seconds.
3. Without pressing the brake, turn the ignition OFF.

This works the same on the 4xe and the 392. The same instructions appear in both the 2021 and 2024 JL manuals.

Why the reset does not work

• The engine started. On a JL, pressing the brake while pushing START starts the engine. On a JK, turning the key too far starts it. Start over with the engine off.
• Pedal presses too quick or too short. Each press has to reach the floor. Slow, full strokes work better than fast pumping.
• More than 10 seconds. Count them. All three presses must finish inside the window.
• Floor mat in the way. A thick aftermarket mat can stop the pedal from reaching full travel.
• Wrong menu on the JL. The manual’s method uses the cluster display between the gauges: Vehicle Info, then Oil Life, using the steering wheel buttons.
• It reset, but the reminder was actually a different message. Other service messages, such as a tire pressure or Stop/Start warning, are separate and need their own fix.

Oil type and capacity by engine

These figures come from Jeep’s owner’s manuals for the model year shown. Capacities are with a filter change. Oil specifications and capacities can change between years, so confirm against the manual for your exact Jeep and the grade printed on the oil filler cap. Fill to the listed amount, run the engine briefly, wait a few minutes and check the dipstick before adding more.

Note the change for the 3.6L between generations: the 2017 JK manual calls for 5W-20, while the JL manuals call for 0W-20. If you own a 2018 Wrangler, check which generation it is: 2018 was a crossover year, with both the JK (sold as the Wrangler JK) and the new JL on sale.

Checking the level between changes

The oil life percentage says nothing about how much oil is in the engine. Jeep’s JL manuals list checking the engine oil level among the monthly and pre-trip checks, and the 6.4L schedule adds a check at every fuel stop. Check with the Jeep on level ground and the engine off for a few minutes so the oil drains back. The 2024 JL manual says to keep the level within the crosshatch on the dipstick, and that adding 1 quart when the reading is at the low end raises it to the high end. Wipe up any oil spilled on top of the engine, which the manual also recommends, because it smokes and smells once the exhaust heats up.

If you have to top up often between changes, note how much and how often. Steady consumption on an older 3.8L or 3.6L is worth mentioning at the next service, and a sudden need for oil usually means a leak. How often to change the oil

The indicator calculates oil life from how the engine is used: short trips, towing, and very hot or cold weather bring the reminder sooner. Jeep’s manuals also set hard limits that apply even if the indicator has not come on.

• Most JK (later years) and JL engines: never exceed 10,000 miles, 12 months or 350 hours of engine run time, whichever comes first. The 2017 JK manual says severe conditions can bring the reminder as early as 3,500 miles.
• 6.4L 392 (JL): never exceed 6,000 miles or six months. The 2024 manual also notes the indicator does not track time, so change the oil at six months even without a reminder.
• 2010-era JK 3.8L: the 2010 manual sets a 6,000-mile or six-month maximum.
• Severe duty, all models: Jeep recommends changing the oil at 4,000 miles if the Jeep is driven in dusty, off-road conditions or runs mostly at idle or very low rpm.
• When the reminder appears: Jeep says to have the oil changed within the next 500 miles.

The 4xe: oil still ages when the engine does not run

Plug-in hybrid owners who drive mostly on electric power sometimes assume the oil lasts forever. Jeep’s 2024 JL manual says otherwise: fuel and oil degrade over time even if the vehicle has not been driven much, and the 4xe notifies the driver when it runs the gas engine to maintain the oil and fuel systems.
