How to Remove Jeep Wrangler Doors and Hard Top (JK and JL)

To remove a Jeep Wrangler door, roll the window down, take out the two hinge pin screws with a T50 Torx driver, unplug the door wiring connector, release the door check, and lift the door straight up off its hinges with a helper. The steps are nearly the same on the JK (2007 to 2018) and JL (2018 on). The differences are in how the wiring connector unplugs and how the door check detaches: a strap on the JK, a T40 Torx check bolt on the JL.

Jeep’s owner’s manuals for both generations say door removal is for off-road operation, warn against driving on public roads with the doors off, and note that the outside mirrors come off with the doors. Mirrors are the practical legal issue, covered below.

Tools you need

A 3/8-inch ratchet with Torx bits is the easiest setup. Add a padded mat or door cart, a bag for screws, and painter’s tape if you want to mark which door is which.

How to remove JL Wrangler front doors (2018 on)

These steps follow the 2021 JL owner’s manual.

1. Roll the window all the way down to avoid damaging the glass.
2. Remove the upper and lower hinge pin screws from the outside hinges with a T50 Torx driver. The manual suggests storing the screws in the cargo tray under the rear load floor.
3. Remove the plastic wiring access door under the instrument panel by sliding it along the door frame toward the seats until the tabs release. Do not force it; the cover breaks easily.
4. Release the wiring harness: pull up the red locking tab, push and hold the black security tab under the harness, and lift the harness lever to the open position.
5. Pull the connector straight down to unplug it, and tuck it into the lower door pocket.
6. With the door open, remove the check bolt from the door check on the body side with a T40 Torx driver.
7. Lift the door with a helper until the hinge pins clear their hinges, and set it down on padding.

With the front doors off, the JL cluster shows that Blind Spot Alert is temporarily unavailable, and the power mirrors and power door locks are unavailable, according to the manual.

How to remove JL rear doors (four-door)

1. Roll the window down.
2. Remove the upper and lower hinge pin screws with a T50 Torx driver.
3. Slide the front seat fully forward.
4. Pry off the plastic wiring access door at the bottom of the B-pillar.
5. Squeeze the tab at the base of the harness and unplug the connector.
6. Remove the check screw from the center door check with a T40 Torx. The manual suggests leaving the check arm extended for easier reinstallation.
7. Lift the door off with a helper.

How to remove JK Wrangler doors (2007 to 2018)

These steps follow the 2017 JK owner’s manual.

1. Roll the window down.
2. Remove the hinge pin screws with a T50 Torx driver.
3. Disconnect the door wiring harness connector under the instrument panel (front doors) or at the B-pillar (rear doors on four-door models).
4. Unhook the door check strap. Do not let the door swing fully open without it, since the mirror can hit and damage the paint.
5. Lift the door off the hinges with a helper.

Putting the doors back on

Reinstallation is the reverse, with a few details that matter. From the JL manual:

• Guide the upper pin in first. The upper hinge pin is longer, which helps line up the door.
• Reattach the door check before closing the door. Closing the door first can damage the check. The manual gives 19.9 ft-lb for the JL front door check screw.
• Do not overtighten the hinge pin screws. The manual warns hinge pins can break if overtightened and gives a maximum torque, with 3.8 ft-lb listed in the front door installation steps. Use a torque wrench rather than an impact driver.
• Seat the wiring connector straight in with light finger pressure until the harness lever starts to lower, then close the lever fully and push the red tab down to lock it. Jeep warns that damage from an incorrectly reconnected connector is not covered by the new vehicle warranty.
• Refit the cloth strap to the metal hook inside the vehicle, and replace the access covers.

Removing the hard top

The Freedom Top panels over the front seats come off by hand. The main hard top shell needs tools and people.

JL (2018 on): the 2021 manual says to remove the left Freedom panel before the right, releasing the latches and the header latch on each. The hard top itself is held by T50 Torx screws: two at the B-pillar and six along the body. Disconnect the rear window wiring harness and the washer hose before lifting. Jeep says four adults are required. The manual lists torque values for the B-pillar and body screws for reinstallation; use them.

JK (2007 to 2018): the 2017 manual lists T40 Torx screws: two at the B-pillar on four-door models and six along the body sides. Disconnect the wiring harness and washer hose first. Four adults are required, and the manual gives a reinstall torque for the screws.

Store the top on a hoist, a dedicated cart or padded blocks. Never set it directly on its edges on concrete; the seals and edges damage easily.

Mirrors and the law

On both the JK and JL the outside mirrors are mounted on the doors. Jeep’s manuals state that federal law requires outside mirrors on vehicles for on-road use, and recommend a replacement cowl-mounted mirror from a dealer.

JL Wranglers may also have Jeep’s Door Off Mirror Kit, which mounts mirrors on the upper body door hinges once the front doors are off. The manual’s steps use a T40 Torx for the cowl bolt and bracket bolts and a T30 Torx for the mirror screws. Aftermarket hinge-mounted mirrors do the same job on the JK.

Fitting the JL kit, as the 2021 manual describes it, goes like this once the front doors are off:

1. Remove the cowl bolt closest to the door opening with a T40 Torx and keep it safe.
2. Push the mirror bracket forward onto the A-pillar, lining up its bottom with the upper door hinge and the empty cowl bolt hole.
3. Fit the bracket bushing behind the bracket and insert the bracket bolt through it.
4. Insert the hinge shoulder bolt up through the upper hinge into the bracket, then turn the bracket knob toward the rear to hold it.
5. Tighten both bolts with a T40 Torx to the torque values printed in the manual.
6. Lower the mirror onto the bracket and fit its three screws with a T30 Torx.

Reverse the steps and refit the cowl bolt before the doors go back on.

Beyond mirrors, equipment rules differ by state. Some states specify which mirrors are required and how far behind the vehicle the driver must be able to see. Check your state’s vehicle code or DMV guidance before driving doors-off on public roads, and fit mirrors either way.

Safety with the doors off

• Everyone wears a seat belt. Jeep’s manuals say all occupants must be belted with doors removed. See the seat belt alarm guide if the chime is bothering you, but keep the belts on.
• Do not carry the doors inside the Jeep. Jeep warns they can injure occupants in a crash.
• Keep arms and objects inside. Brush, rocks and trees come close on narrow trails.
• Know the messages. With the front doors off, a JL shows a Blind Spot Alert Temporarily Unavailable message; the dashboard lights guide explains each one.
• Expect water and dust inside. Protect electronics, and dry the interior after rain. The door connectors under the dash are exposed; keep them dry.
• Remember the lost features. Blind spot monitoring and power locks do not work without the doors on a JL.

Storing doors and keeping them in good shape

Store doors on a padded rack, cart or blankets in a dry garage, out of direct sun. Lay them so the weight is not on the wiring connector or the mirror. Keep each door’s hinge pin screws in a labeled bag. Wipe the seals and apply a rubber protectant before long storage, and check the hinges for corrosion when you reinstall.
